   Disconnect the battery

   Open the boot and disconnect the negative (black) terminal on the battery. Wait a minimum of 10 minutes before proceeding. This disarms the airbag system.

   Position the wheel

   Make sure your front wheels are pointing straight ahead. This ensures the wheel goes back on centred.

   Remove the airbag

   On the back of the steering wheel you will find two T30 Torx bolts — one on the left side and one on the right. Remove both. Gently pull the airbag towards you and disconnect the yellow airbag connector and any horn connectors. Set the airbag safely to one side, face up.

   Remove the centre nut

   Using a 24mm socket, remove the centre nut on the steering column. Keep this — you will reuse it.

   Pull off the old wheel

   Grip the wheel firmly and pull directly towards you. It may need a firm tug. Disconnect the remaining multi-plug connectors from the back of the wheel (these control your stalk buttons).

   Fit the new wheel

   Plug all connectors into the back of your new Apex Steering wheel — they are keyed and will only fit in the correct position. Line up the spline on the column with the centre of the wheel and push firmly until seated.

   Refit the centre nut

   Torque the centre nut back to approximately 45–50Nm. Do not overtighten.

   Reconnect and refit the airbag

   Plug the airbag connector and horn connectors back in, click the airbag back into place, and refit the two T30 bolts. Reconnect your battery. Turn on the ignition and confirm no warning lights remain.

The F Series 5 Series follows an identical process to the F30 above. The airbag bolt positions and connector layout are the same. Follow all 8 steps above and your install will be complete.

   Disconnect the battery

   Disconnect the negative terminal and wait at least 10 minutes before touching anything near the airbag.

   Straighten the wheels

   Ensure front wheels are pointing straight ahead before removal.

   Pop out the airbag

   On the E9X, the airbag releases by inserting a thin flathead screwdriver into the two small holes on the back of the wheel spokes (at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock). Push inward to release the spring clips. Disconnect the airbag and horn wiring carefully.

   Remove the centre nut

   Remove the 24mm centre nut and retain it for reinstallation.
5. 05
   Remove and replace the wheel

   Pull the old wheel off and disconnect stalk connectors. Reconnect all plugs to the new Apex Steering wheel — they are all uniquely keyed — then seat the new wheel on the spline.
6. 06
   Refit everything

   Torque the centre nut to 45Nm. Click the airbag back into place until both spring clips engage. Reconnect the battery and verify no dashboard warning lights.
